A Few More popidiot Tees @ Plan 9 Records

More tees at Plan 9 Records, get'em while they last.

Mens Monkey tee, small thur xxlarge, the color of the tee is more of a dark navy, this picture was taken with a cheap camera phone so the colors aren't exactly accurate.

Mens Speedy tee, small thur xxlarge, again the colors aren't as accurate as they could be due to the cheap camera phone. The color of the fabric is a deep rich forest green.

SKULL-A-DAY 2.0 Monday...

Noah Scalin the crazed mad genius behind the Skull-a-day project has been nice enough to ask us to collaborate with him in a contest give away. We're going to give a Skelly t-shirt to a reader who'll be picked at random on his site, the catch is, they have to provide an explanation or comment as to who or what Skelly is running from. The winner will be chosen Sunday, February 15th, so hurry over to Skull-a-day and throw your cranium in the ring.

To commemorate this momentous occasion we have instituted the popidiot Super Secret Society where when you sign up you'll receive compelling news about the latest popidiot creations, snazzy postcards, limited-edition freebies, exclusive member offers and automatic entry in our bi-weekly drawings to win a free popidiot t-shirt. That's right, every other week one of you lucky so-and-sos will win a FREE popidiot t-shirt. To do this just follow the link on our home page and fill out the form.

1000 Garment Graphics

We just received our copy of 1000 Garment Graphics which you can order from Amazon -

It was designed and edited by Jeffrey Everette of El Jefe Design for Rockport Publishing. Once again El Jefe did a bang up job. The book is about printing on garments, mostly t-shirts but includes many other things such as hats, bags, belts, etc. If you love personal, quirky, mostly hand printed wares done by artists for the love of it, most of which is being done without the constraints of clients, this book is a great place to start. There's a lot of amazing work in the book. Some by friends such as Spaghetti Kiss, Adhouse Books and Squidfire and a lot of stuff by folks we're unfamiliar with but love being exposed to.

Some might say that it's full of ephemeral trashy pop culture junk and on some levels they'd be right. But we at popidiot love that kind of thing, for better or worse it's our nature.

Society of Illustrators 51

All of us at popidiot were thrilled to find out that our cover from last years catalogue was chosen to be included in The Society of Illustrators Annual 51. This is the second time in 3 years that something of ours has had the honor of being included in one of Society's annuals, all's we can say is "Thank You!" SI. The opening for the show will be Friday, March 6th, 6:00 - 9:00 at 128 E. 63rd St. N.Y. So if you happen to be at the show and see someone in a ridiculous T-shirt, buy'em a drink.

We look forward to seeing Barry Bruner, another RVA illustrator and fellow Team8press cohort, who was honored to have one of his pieces selected, at the show. Congratulations Barry.

Even though we posted the cover for our catalogue just 4 posts ago, we feel in light of this exciting development that we should go ahead and post it again, please, just humor us.

Now george, behave...

Even though we haven't posted anything in way too long, this post isn't going to be about T-shirts, it's about the sense of relief and joy we're feeling that we finally did something right by not letting yet another election get hijacked by a bunch of money grubbing, short sighted, self interested, entitled pirates.

It looks like the one thing the bush years have given us is a complete repudiation of his administration and everything it stood for. We're going to say something we never thought we would or could, thank you george bush. Without you subjecting the American People to an unthinkably painful eight years, we're not sure that we, the American People, would have had the courage to put someone like  Barack Obama into office.

After watching you over the last couple of weeks, george, doing interview after interview pathetically grasping for something, anything to hang your legacy on that hasn't been tainted by your actions of the last eight years. It seems that the one thing you may actually be able to lay claim to, however inadvertent, is helping to put Obama into office. Let's just hope that Barack, his administration and the American People are up to the Herculean effort that will be necessary to shovel all  the sh!t you've left behind.

Upcoming October Shows...

L to R, Cool Cole being given a ride by Phil Perrine in a hot rod that Phil built from the ground up @ last year's Trash-o-rama.

Another pic. from last year's Trash-o-rama. I'm second from the left, I was given the unexpected honor of being one of the judges in last years Pin-Up contest. It's tough job but someone's gotta do it.

This weekend Sat. Oct. 18th. we'll be at two shows simultaneously, yeah right, we can hardly believe it ourselves.

We'll be at Oystoberfest on the northside of Richmond at St. Thomas' Episcopal Church from 11:00 - 7:00. This event is a fund raiser for Connor's Heroes which is a group that address' childhood cancer, a very good cause. The oyster's and what not will be provided by Johnny and Katrina of Kitchen 64, so you know the food will be great. There will also be bands and a kid's zone. We did this event last year and it was a blast, we're told that it's going to be even better this year.

And we'll also be at Trash-o-rama down in the bottom @ Rocks, 1814 E. Main St. from 10:00 - 5:00. We've done this show twice and if you like old spit and polished Hot Rods, down and dirty Rock-n-Roll, Rock-a-Billy and Pin-Ups, you'll love this show. The vendors will be operating from 10:00 - 5:00 and there will be all kinds of cool stuff for sale. It's a fund raiser for homeless and abused dog's so it's for a very good cause as well.

popidiot advertises

This is our most recent ad which first appeared in the new Love and Rockets which if you haven't picked it up yet you should, it's amazing. It's kinda hard to imagine that the Hernandez Brothers continue to best not only themselves but pretty much everyone out there doing comics and they've been doing so for something like 25 - 30 years. These guys should have a holiday named after them or something.

The ad also appeared in the pre-spx issue of The Comics Journal, the most in depth comprehensive and thought provoking magazine of it's kind. We're just glad they're doing what they're doing.

popidiot catalogue cover

We thought we'd throw up our first ever catalogue cover for no other reason than we like it. That and we're almost completely out of them which is good because our inventory has changed quite a bit since it was published. Oh the learning curve, it can be tough.

SPX... Better Late Than Never

L to R, Spencer Hansen of Team8press and popidiot, myself, Patrick Godfrey of Velocity Comics and OddGod Press and Jesse Bausch, also of OddGod, Peeking over the mini's.

L to R, Patrick and a more complete shot of Jesse, who looks quite excited to be at the show.

We attended SPX A few weekends ago and even though it's primarily a show for alternative comics the good people who run it saw fit to let us participate. To be honest we did have some comics on display. If you're at all familiar with our site you probably know by now that every Tee comes with a comic hang tag. Because of it's small stature some people may dismiss it as a trifle, nothing more than a mere novelty which in fact it was intended to be. But if you'll allow us to blow our horn for a moment, the judges at the Society of Illustrators found it compelling enough to include it in their 49th annual of that years best illustration and in the sequential category no less. So you could look at it as every time you purchase one of our award winning popidiot mini-comics you get a cool T-shirt, not a bad deal. We also had a couple of hand made mini's as well as Project Romantic from AdHouse Press which I was honored to have a short strip in. So we had our comic bases covered and yet somehow we still sold more Tees than comics... weird.

As expected we also meet some really cool people saw some old friends and got some cool loot but we'll post more about that soon. In the meantime enjoy the pics of the the popidiot / Team8press table/s.

Crafty Bastards Washington DC Fall 2008

Here's Jessie and myself trying out our best sales pitch on Jeff of El Jefe Design.

Jessie and Cole taking a well earned rest in-between the ceaseless hawking of our wares.

We just got back from our 3rd time participating in one of our favorite shows, Crafty Bastards. What is Crafty Bastards you ask? It's only one of the coolest alternative craft shows in the mid-atlantic area. It's put on buy the Washington City Paper  and it really is one of the most fun and best run shows that we've had the privilege to attend. Amy, Kim and Sarah along with the many great volunteers do an amazing job with this show. One of the cool fringe benefits to a show like this is meeting other like minded people and seeing friends who are doing similar things. People Like Jeffery Everett of El Jefe design, who designs some of the coolest rock posters you'll ever see. Michael Bracco of Spaghetti Kiss and his lovely wife Shawna of Pink Kiss. Some of our RVA friends that were in attendance are Spencer Hansen of Team8press and Maria Cara Rose of Face Metal Design, Kelly at Modern June, everyone at the Richmond Craft Mafia, who put on some great craft shows of their own here in R-town. And let's not forget my good pal Rob Ullman of Atom Bomb Bikini fame, he's the one who first made us aware of Crafty Bastards as well as some cool alternative comic book shows, thanks Rob.

popidiot's first silk screen poster collaboration with Team8press

Line work...
Finish.

If you've already been to Team8press' website you'll likely know about this, but for those of you who've yet to discover the wonder that is team8press please let this be your official invite. The main man behind Team8 is Spencer Hansen. Not only have we been lucky enough to collaborate with Spencer on popidiot's first large scale silk-screen poster, Spencer is now an official partner with popidiot and we're damn glad to have him on board. In addition to helming the printing of the poster Spencer also did the coloring which I have to admit I was a bit hesitant initially to let someone else color one of my images. But I thought why not, if I'm unhappy with it I'll just re-do it. As it turned out my fears were completely unfounded, Spencer far exceeded my expectations. I'm now looking forward to another screen print collaboration with Spencer but being that he's a very busy fellow I'd better hurry up and reserve an appointment soon.
